Yesterday we launched a new version of ID Proof on our platform. With this we expand the possibilities to remotely check identities, and speed up and optimize the existing process even further.

This release consists of three parts:

• Improving the user experience of identification through Mitek (OCR)
• Improving the user experience with identification via ReadID (NFC chip)
• Extending the information in the receipt.

OCR (Mitek)
For identification with OCR (optical character recognition) Evidos uses Mitek's software. It is possible to check and match a document with a selfie directly from the mobile browser without installation. The user is guided through the steps, and the camera of the cell phone automatically takes a picture when it detects that the document / face is well in view. Someone has to smile to make sure there is a person behind the camera.

Evidos then generates a file, which continues to prove that a document and a person have been matched. In addition, the algorithm uses OCR to extract any text and numbers from the document as quickly and accurately as possible and include them in the file for future proof. Optionally, we can also include the photo of the document in the file for our customers' own checking.

Release
For the OCR functionality with Mitek we are releasing the following improvements:

• The process for two-sided documents with information, such as an ID card, now has a clear intermediate step where someone can turn the document around before proceeding. In this way we prevent that someone does not flip the document but accidentally takes two pictures of the front side of the document.
• The process is now fully bilingual, Dutch and English.
• With sharper images, we also expect the OCR quality to be better than in the next version, and that letters and numbers are less likely to get into the file incorrectly. We remain dependent on device and light quality end user.
• An automatic check on expired documents has been added based on the information retrieved from the photo. The user is notified when we can detect an expired document.
• The checked document type (passport, ID card) is more clearly visible in the file.
• The photo AI has been improved. We see that the process is a lot faster, and that photos are generally sharper. Here we expect to achieve a time gain of several seconds. Note that wifi or telephone range is also an important factor in the speed.
• With sharper pictures we also expect that the OCR quality is better than in the next version, and that letters and numbers have a smaller chance of getting into the file incorrectly. We remain dependent on device and light quality end user.
• When photographing the document, a clearer red frame is shown to hold the document, to support the user even better in the step to be taken.
• When waiting for results, the user is even better informed that the process can take some time.
• We have done tests with driving license with the new version of the OCR software. Unfortunately, we notice that the data coming back from the driver's license is significantly more often of poor quality than that of a passport or ID card. For this reason the driver's license is not active in the solution. We suspect this is due to the small size and low contrast between black and pink compared to the ID card. We advise customers who want to accept a driver's license to use the NFC solution.

NFC (ReadID)
For identification with NFC (contactless chip) we use the software of Innovalor, called ReadID. With this we apply the same technique as for contactless payment in the supermarket, and the chip is read in passport, ID card or driver's license by the contactless reader in the user's smartphone via an APP. The advantage of reading out a chip, is that because of the strict security of the information on this chip, the data and the check for authenticity is of a very high quality.

Release
For the NFC functionality with ReadID, we are releasing the following improvements:

• The process can be fully run on a mobile device, it is not necessary to start the process on a PC.
• An automatic check is made to see if a user is entering a mobile flow.
• Text and explanation on the pages has been improved, especially to explain a user what to do after installing the ReadID Ready app.
• The file now contains dates such as date of birth in a standardized format, previously this could differ between the documents.

Gisteren hebben we een nieuwe versie van ID Proof gelanceerd op ons platform. Hiermee verruimen we de mogelijkheden om identiteiten te controleren op afstand, en versnellen en optimaliseren we het bestaande proces nog verder.

Deze release bestaat uit drie onderdelen:

• Het verbeteren van de gebruikerservaring bij identificatie via Mitek (OCR)
• Het verbeteren van de gebruikerservaring bij identificatie via ReadID (NFC chip)
• Het verruimen van de informatie in het dossier.

OCR (Mitek)

Voor het identificeren met OCR (optische karakterherkenning) maakt Evidos gebruik van de software van Mitek. Hierbij is het mogelijk om zonder installatie direct vanuit de mobiele browser een document te controleren en te matchen met een selfie. De gebruiker wordt door de stappen geloodst, en de camera van de mobiele telefoon maakt automatisch een foto wanneer deze detecteert dat het document/het gezicht goed in beeld is. Iemand moet glimlachen om zo zeker te zijn dat er een mens achter de camera zit.

 Evidos genereert vervolgens een dossier, wat ook in de toekomst bewijst dat een document en persoon gematcht zijn. Daarnaast probeert het algoritme via OCR zo snel en goed mogelijk eventuele tekst en cijfers uit het document te halen en in het dossier op te nemen voor toekomstige bewijsvoering. Optioneel kunnen we de gemaakte foto van het document ook in dossier opnemen voor eigen controle door onze klanten.

Release

Voor de OCR functionaliteit met Mitek releasen we de volgende verbeteringen:

• Het proces voor documenten met twee zijdes met informatie, zoals een ID kaart, kent nu een duidelijke tussenstap waarbij iemand het document kan omdraaien alvorens verder te gaan. Zo voorkomen we dat iemand het document niet omdraait maar per ongeluk twee keer een foto van de voorkant wordt gemaakt.
• Het proces is nu volledig tweetalig te gebruiken, Nederlands en Engels.
• Met scherpere foto’s verwachten we ook dat de OCR kwaliteit beter is dan in de volgende versie, en dat letters en cijfers een kleinere kans hebben om foutief in het dossier te komen. Hierbij blijft dat we afhankelijk zijn van apparaat en lichtkwaliteit eindgebruiker.
• Een automatische controle op verlopen documenten is toegevoegd op basis van de opgehaalde informatie uit de foto. De gebruiker krijgt een melding te zien als we een verlopen document kunnen detecteren.
• Het gecontroleerde documenttype (paspoort, IDkaart) komt duidelijker in beeld in het dossier.
• De foto AI is verbeterd. We zien dat het proces een stuk sneller te doorlopen is, en dat foto’s over het algemeen scherper zijn. Hier verwachten we een tijdswinst van meerdere seconden te halen. Let op dat wifi of telefoonbereik ook een belangrijke factor in de snelheid is.
• Met scherpere foto’s verwachten we ook dat de OCR kwaliteit beter is dan in de volgende versie, en dat letters en cijfers een kleinere kans hebben om foutief in het dossier te komen. Hierbij blijft dat we afhankelijk zijn van apparaat en lichtkwaliteit eindgebruiker.
• Bij het fotograferen van het document wordt een duidelijker rood kader getoond om het document in te houden, om de gebruiker nog beter te ondersteunen in de te nemen stap.
• Bij het wachten op resultaat wordt de gebruiker nog beter geïnformeerd dat het proces even kan duren.
• We hebben testen gedaan met rijbewijs met de nieuwe versie van de OCR software. Helaas merken we dat de data welke van het rijbewijs terugkomt aanmerkelijk vaker van slechte kwaliteit is dan die van paspoort of ID kaart. Om deze reden is het rijbewijs niet actief in de oplossing. We vermoeden dat dit komt door het kleine formaat en laag contrast tussen zwart en roze ten opzichte van de ID kaart. We adviseren klanten die rijbewijs willen accepteren om de NFC oplossing te gebruiken.

NFC (ReadID)

Voor het identificeren met NFC (contactloze chip) gebruiken we de software van Innovalor, genaamd ReadID. Hiermee passen we dezelfde techniek toe als bij het contactloos betalen in de supermarkt, en wordt de chip in paspoort, IDkaart of rijbewijs uitgelezen door de contactloze lezer in de smartphone van de gebruiker via een APP. Het voordeel van het uitlezen van een chip, is dat door de strenge beveiliging van de informatie op deze chip de data en de controle op echtheid van een zeer hoge kwaliteit is.

Release

Voor de NFC functionaliteit met ReadID releasen we de volgende verbeteringen:

• Het proces is volledig te doorlopen op een mobiele telefoon, het is niet nodig om het proces op een PC te starten.
• Er wordt automatisch gecontroleerd of een gebruiker op een mobiele flow binnenkomt.
• Tekst en uitleg op de pagina’s is verbeterd, met name om een gebruiker uit te leggen wat deze moet doen na het installeren van de ReadID Ready app.
• Het dossier bevat nu datums zoals geboortedatum in een gestandaardiseerd formaat, voorheen kon dit verschillen tussen de documenttypen.
